Located in the southern part of the Adriatic Sea, just a few hours’ sail from Dubrovnik, the Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park is one of the most attractive places for incentive programs in the region. This eleventh nature park in Croatia encompasses 46 islands, islets, rocks and reefs, among which Lastovo and Sušac stand out. Thanks to its preservation, wealth of natural and cultural values, and the unique experience of the Dalmatian way of life, it represents an ideal destination for group travel, corporate trips, and incentive journeys.
Untouched Nature and Cultural Heritage
Lastovo is known for its mystical beauty, dense greenery, fertile fields, and crystal-clear sea. With an average of 2,700 hours of sunshine per year, it is one of the sunniest islands in the Adriatic. Here you will find steep cliffs, underwater caves, coral colonies – especially gorgonians, meadows of seagrass (Posidonia), as well as rich bird and fish habitats. A special feature of this park is also one of the darkest night skies in Europe – due to minimal light pollution, Lastovo is a candidate for International Dark Sky Park status, making stargazing an unforgettable experience.
In addition to its natural beauty, Lastovo abounds in cultural and historical landmarks. The Lastovo Statute from 1310, the early Christian basilica in Ubli from the 6th century, numerous defensive structures, and 46 churches scattered across the island testify to its rich past.
The unique settlement of Lastovo, amphitheatrically positioned on a slope, is adorned with characteristic “fumari” – distinctive chimneys from the 17th and 18th centuries, while the historic fishermen’s houses in Lučica are the last preserved example of a Baroque fishing village on the Adriatic.
Among the traditions, special attention is deserved by the Lastovo Carnival (Poklad), one of the oldest carnival customs in Europe, more than five centuries old and protected as Croatia’s intangible cultural heritage.
Activities for Teams and Incentive Programs Offering a Unique Experience
The Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park provides a variety of opportunities for active and educational stays. Organised boat excursions allow visitors to discover numerous bays and islets. Sailing along the northern side of the island passes through the bays of Kruce, Zaklopatica, Mihajla, Lučica, and Zace towards the Lastovnjaci islet group. With a short stop at the islet of Mladine in Saplun Bay, home to the only sandy beach of the archipelago, participants have the chance to enjoy swimming and snorkelling. On the return, they will discover bays on the southern side of the island, most notably Skrivena Luka with the Struga lighthouse from 1839, as well as remnants of military structures in the Velo Lago Bay. The route passes by the islet of Makarac with the Church of St. Raphael (15th century) in Velo Lago, and concludes by sailing between the islands of Prežba and Mrčara to Pasadur.
Special night tours, “Starry Sky of Lastovo,” enable stargazing from the Hum viewpoint or other suitable locations, offering spectacular panoramic views and perfect conditions for astronomical observation. The tour includes star observation with explanations using a laser pointer, viewing celestial bodies through a telescope, and learning about the impact of light pollution on nature – especially on sensitive plant and animal species.
Educational walking trails connect nature and culture through interpretive boards. The “Through the Present into the Past” trail passes through significant habitats rich in flora and fauna – Aleppo pine and holm oak forests, fields with ponds, vineyards and olive groves, as well as the town of Lastovo. The “Artina” trail is located near Zaklopatica, where the birds Yelkouan shearwaters and Cory’s shearwaters nest. This educational path tells their story, as well as that of the Mediterranean gull, whose almost entire population of 13–60 pairs lives in the Lastovo Archipelago. The Yelkouan shearwater is also a Mediterranean endemic species, nesting in Croatia mainly in the central Adriatic, with the largest numbers on Lastovo. It is therefore not surprising that within the project “LIFE Artina – a network for the protection of seabirds in the Adriatic,” an educational trail was designed and implemented here, named after the local name for the Yelkouan shearwater – Artina.
Additional activities can also be organised, such as:
- Hiking and cycling routes to viewpoints Hum, Sozanj and Galičine, with panoramic views of the archipelago, Korčula, Mljet, and even the Italian coast.
- Diving and snorkelling in underwater areas rich in wrecks, corals, and lobsters.
- Visits to lighthouses such as Struga, Glavat and Sušac, some of which even offer accommodation for exclusive incentive experiences.
Such activities provide a unique combination of adventure, teamwork, and relaxation – ideal for incentive programs that combine business with an unforgettable experience in nature.
Flavours of Lastovo – Authentic Gastronomy
One of the island’s unforgettable experiences is certainly its gastronomy. Freshly caught fish and seafood – sardines on a skewer, eel stew, grilled moray – are served alongside home-grown vegetables from fertile fields. Sweet delicacies such as a traditional layered cake (skale), small fried dough balls (prkle), candied orange peels (arancini) and quince cheese (kotonjata) reveal centuries-old traditions of island cuisine, while a glass of Lastovo’s maraština (local wine wine) or plavac mali (red wine) completes the authentic gastronomic experience.
Accessibility and Connectivity
Despite its remoteness, Lastovo is easily accessible from Dubrovnik: catamaran lines connect Dubrovnik via Korčula and Mljet with Ubli, the island’s main port, while it is also possible to arrive by private or chartered boat. This allows for the organisation of one-day or multi-day incentive programs combining sailing, exploration, and relaxation in a unique Mediterranean setting.
With its authentic charm, natural wealth and cultural distinctiveness, the Lastovo Archipelago is the ideal backdrop for unforgettable incentive programs near Dubrovnik. The combination of outdoor activities, unique heritage and local gastronomy makes Lastovo a perfect destination for all those who seek more than a classic excursion – an experience that inspires, connects teams, and remains in lasting memory.
