The oldest quarantine in the world
Throughout history, Dubrovnik has been a port and trading city, so it has always been visited by travelers from all over the world. In order to protect against the penetration and spread of various infectious diseases, especially the plague, on July 27, 1377, the Grand Council of the Republic of Dubrovnik passed a decision introducing quarantine as a health protection measure for the first time in the world. Quarantine was first carried out on the nearby islands, and by the decision of the Senate of the Republic of Dubrovnik in 1590, it was placed near the city walls, at the eastern entrance to the city, at the intersection of the main land and sea trade routes. The impressive complex built in the period from 1627 to 1647 is one of the preventive health measures for the protection of the inhabitants of the then Republic of Dubrovnik. The importance of Lazareti in the protection of the city was confirmed when in 1724 they were declared an integral part of the city walls. Like the walls themselves, they consist of a plateau and ten naves (halls) between which there are five inner courtyards. They are the only completely preserved quarantine building on the European part of the Mediterranean, and since 1994 they have been under the protection of UNESCO.
Today, this oldest quarantine complex in the world plays an important role in Dubrovnik's cultural life, Lazareti is a multi-purpose centre - for art, entertainment, trade, meetings, catering, fashion and numerous events of social interest.
Organisation of events in the impressive stone naves of the Lazareti
Today, the Lazareti complex is managed by a company owned by the City of Dubrovnik - Dubrovnik Heritage, and the spaces available for rent and organisation of events are five naves with associated terraces, as well as a plateau above the naves.
The first nave, called Multifunctional Hall 1, has a capacity of up to 50 people in a banquet setting, and the second nave, i.e. Multifunctional Hall 2, has a similar capacity. Multifunctional hall 4 has a capacity of up to 70 people. The so-called Sound Room with a capacity of up to 90 people in a banquet setting is located in the fifth nave. The terraces between the naves can accommodate 35 to 50 people. In a conference set-up, capacities range from 50 to 120 seats per nave or hall. It is also possible to connect several naves/halls and terraces if it is a big event. Lazareti has hosted events with a capacity of up to 500-600 people.
In addition to space rental, Dubrovnik heritage also offers rental of additional equipment such as stage, stage equipment (tables and chairs), public address system, microphone equipment, projector, Internet, curtains (side and background), chairs, armchairs, low and high tables and pedestals.
