Archaeological Museum Exhibitions

Two exhibitions have been opened on the ground floor of Fort Revelin:

Archaeological Museum Exhibitions

The exhibition entitled Dubrovnik Archaeological Museum's Early Medieval Sculpture features the most representative parts of stone church furniture – altar balustrades, pulpits, ciboria, choir stalls and fragments of stone architecture – columns, capitals, portals, windows and imposts in the Pre-Romanesque and Early-Romanesque styles. Dating from the 8th to 12th centuries, the works were made for Benedictine churches in Dubrovnik and its surroundings by members of a prime quality stone mason school.

The exhibition Revelin, Archaeological Research / Architectural Development / Foundry presents the course of construction of two forts built in the same location: originating in the 15th century, the first fort housed a number of cannon and bell casting furnaces, and the houses of master bronzesmiths and builders, discovered during the excavations carried out within the second, i.e. present-day fort, constructed in the second quarter of the 16th century, after the design by A. Ferramolino, a military engineer of Bergamo. In the military construction terminology, Revelin denotes an external fortification, a kind of a bastion in the city moat which two bridges connect with the city and its outskirts.
