The play "Memory of Purple Rains" takes its title from a poem by Luko Paljetak and is a theatrical tribute and remembrance of the great poet who was often part of Lero's repertoire explorations and artistic challenges. Through the selection of Paljetak's poetry alongside various other poetic, dramatic, and prose texts, arranged within Lero's recognizable stage poetics, a mosaic of scenes and dialogues is created. These scenes question life chronologies, illusions, loves, and dreams, forming an inspiring mirror-like reflection of a wistful Dubrovnik album of memories.
It evokes both the heritage inscribed in the soul of the City and the contemporary one that finds us with every new morning hidden in the rose of winds. "Memory of Purple Rains" can be seen as both a futile and a stimulating inquiry into women's destinies, dreams, and unforgettable traces—etched like a sigh into the counting rhythms of their lives.
Memories cannot be forgotten; here they become an elegiac impulse and a pretext for an empathetic game and a theatrical plea. A game that does not foresee its consequences, because "only the purple rains will go on singing / and she will slowly begin to understand herself."
Some elements of the performance: fragments of prose, dramatic, and other writings:
Luko Paljetak, Purple Rains (1973), Roses (2023) / Sławomir Mrożek, The Widows / Davor Mojaš, Letters Not About Basil, Dusts / Jack Kerouac, Mexican Loneliness / Un Amore Grande / Muza Pavlova, Cheerful Sclerosis / Young Man Inflamed with Love (Milovan Tatarin, An Erotic Delicacy from the 17th Century).
"Purple rains are falling, and they are the eyes of all those beautiful women who now in the sky turn into dusk, turn into autumn, while the earth is still warm and the stars scratch across it with their nails, and across the sea through which flows that blood in which I swim together with shaken fruit..." (L. Paljetak, Purple Rains)
"A certain sentimental mood overcomes me. Probably because I live seriously." (D. Mojaš)
"If I leave, the leaving is over / If I sleep, relaxation is dangerous / Relaxation tightly closes my eyelids / If I do nothing, nothing happens to me..." (J. Kerouac)
"Then the day began to dawn, the will of both of them rushed forward, they still wrestled at the gate, which of them would remain the stronger above, but once the morning broke more clearly, each went his own way." (Young Man Inflamed with Love)
