THE PERFUME AND SUPPLIANCE OF A MINUTE; NO MORE - Renée Delores
From the Greek amphi-phoreus meaning ‘carried on both sides’Fourteen hand-built Amphorea to be submerged 20-40 meters under the sea off the coast of Dubrovnik in October of 2022 and retrieved in September 2023. Amphorae broken during firing or while under sea will be repaired by Kintsugi, with crushed lapis lazuli in place of the traditional use of gold.

DescriptionAmphorae is the first work of a three-piece project (fourteen Amphorae, one black and white print, and a double projection film) installed as an experimental examination of the play Hamlet. In Amphorae, fourteen pithos are marked by nature and encrusted with residual accretions of life undersea. The vessels bear a likeness to the female form, functioning to carry within them the currency, or tender, of subsistence—cardboard boxes of the ancient world. The Amphorae fold back on time, compressing histories. The vessels act as lenses, enabling us to become explorers of foreign continents and seas.Artist BioRenée Delores is a cross-disciplinary artist. Her works primarily revolve around notions of interspecies relational complexity, sacrifice, and atavism. Renée uses her practice as a humble attempt to ponder relationships, broadly, exploring what is left in the wake. Her process privileges elements out of her control through collaborations with unknown forces, by leaving space for uncertainty. Using a variety of media to realize her ideas, her work has taken form through materials as divergent as drawings rendered by a parrot (a frequent collaborator), tattoos, film, sculpture, textiles, animal tracking, sound, and handbound books.Artist CVEducationSan Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CABachelor of Fine Arts, PaintingUniversity of California, Berkeley, CAMaster of Fine Arts, Art PracticeSan Jose State University, San Jose, CAMaster of Library and Information ScienceSelect AwardsCalder Hayes / Tevis Jacobs/ BAM Council Founders Award, UC Berkeley, 2008Eisner Award for Creative Achievement, UC Berkeley, 2008Graduate Fellowship, Department of Art Practice, UC Berkeley, 2006, 2007San Francisco Art Institute Merit Scholarship, 1999, 2000ResidenciesGolden Snail Artist’s ResidencyVermont Studio CenterSelect ExhibitionsSolo/Two-person ExhibitionsResidue, Martina Johnston Gallery, Berkeley, CAB-Sides, Sub Rosa Gallery, San Francisco, CADear Season, in conjunction with Shine, Build, San Francisco, CARustic, Build, San Francisco, CAMusee D’Honneur Minuscule, New Langton Arts, San Francisco, CAGroup ExhibitionsFertile Ground: Art and Community in California, Oakland Museum of California, Oakland, CAConversation Continuum, Martina Johnston Gallery, Berkeley, CAHeliography, Invisible City Audio Tours, Oakland, CA Women on Nature, Verge Gallery, Sacramento, CAThese Canyons, Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA070707 Conference: A Random Walk Through New Media, Berkeley Center for New Media, Samuel P.
