Communication, any form of dialogue, mental, verbal or visual is the recurrenttheme in the work of the artist Nika Radić. She uses it as a tool to shape space, inher video and audio works but also indirectly when she induces self-reflexion asshe hypnotizes people to independently construct their personal perspectives,spaces and emotions.It is hypnosis, as an altered state of consciousness, that she uses as a methodto overcome possible communication distortions. As we can regard Nika’swork as a sort of communication perpetuum mobile, that continues to asknew questions, ranging from how individuals can see an object and how theirpersonal experience limits their freedom to see it, to how one can perceive thefuture, the act of bringing hypnosis into her practice seems utterly logical.These, let us call them hypnotic, performances show a subconscious visionof, you won’t believe it, a better future. How is this possible? When we takethe dystopian appearance of the world into account, torn by wars, pandemicsand the destruction of natural resources, wouldn’t it be expected that oursubconscious resonates along those frequencies?However, the audience in a hypnotic state, that the artist brought themto, imagined a space and a feeling that was mainly a shared experience. Theytalked about people that they were close to, about pleasant surroundings, greencalming areas, plants…This time Nika Radić is exhibiting documentary videos of hypnotized peoplein the gallery space that is transformed by photographs on canvas, hangingfrom the ceiling. The artist sometimes uses the images of the same galleryspace to create a kaleidoscope perception displacement. However, this time,avoiding the uneasy element that such spaces can create, the photographs showa different space, an ideal image of the future. The space is taken over by nature.It is completely green and calming. It is a space that invites us and surrounds uswith peace. As we walk into this fictional space, we hear the sounds of peopletalking in different languages and telling us about their hypnotic experience.Perhaps a walk in this suggestive space, while listening to the voices,can induce a state of trance in us. Perhaps our Tomorrow can be different.Intrinsically better. Even if it was constructed.
