MIDSUMMER SCENE is the only English theatre festival in Southeastern Europe and in the relatively short period of time it has established itself as a major cultural event and as a platform for international concepts and collaborations.
Festival Midsummer Scene coincides with the beginning of summer and our main stage is Fort Lovrjenac, one of the world’s most evocative and atmospheric venues in Europe. In its first year, the Festival opened at an important milestone: 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. Dubrovnik joined the world celebrations of this important year by staging one of the Bard’s most beloved comedies: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Season 2017 sees the return to this magical play with a brand new version directed by Helen Tennison, who has envisioned the Festival’s headline productions in 2015 and 2016.
Our production of Twelfth Night, originally staged for Season 2015 at Fort Lovrjenac, one of the most evocative open air venues in the world, has transferred to Vienna's English Theatre at Christmas 2016 where it ran for two months and proved to be a commercial and critically acclaimed success. The production also travelled to Bermuda Festival of Performing Arts in January 2017 and has been invited to Shakespeare Festival in Neuss, Germany. Our production of Hamlet, celebrating 400 years of Shakespeare's legacy in 2016, featured an actress in the titular role, which was the first time a woman played Hamlet on a major Croatian stage.
This year, we are staging A Midsummer Night's Dream and the production, keeping with the international spirit of our Festival, will feature international artists, experienced verse speakers with established careers in the theatre. Last season, we had an American cast member in our production of Hamlet.
Midsummer Scene is a project of the City of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board, and it is a joint production with Brilliant Events, Dubrovnik and Honey-tongued Theatre Productions Ltd. London.
