The worldwide mega-popular television series "Game of Thrones" produced by HBO has made Dubrovnik an attractive destination for many fans of the series from all over the world. However, Dubrovnik was the favourite choice of numerous production companies both before and after that. As a result, locations within the city known for scenes immortalized on the film and TV screen have become ideal sets for incentive programs inspired by favourite screen adaptations. The filming of movies in Dubrovnik began already in the period of the First World War. It is mentioned that the first film was shot in Dubrovnik in 1916, and it is the film "Monna Vanna" from 1917, directed by Jene Illés. The confirmed oldest and preserved film that was partly shot in Dubrovnik is the film "Aphrodite" from 1918.
In the second half of the 20th century, the films "The Taste of Violence" (1961), "Three Fantastic Supermen" (1967), the film about Marco Polo "Marco the Magnificent" (1965) were shot in front of the Sponza Palace, then the domestic film "Occupation in 26 Pictures" (1978) and the film about the Spanish artist "Goya - oder Der arge Weg der Erkenntnis" (1971). This was followed by the somewhat more modern superhero films "Captain America" from 1990 and the comedy "The Pope Must Die" from 1991.
The most watched television series ever, "Game of Thrones", was filmed in Dubrovnik from 2011 to 2018, from the second to the last, eighth season, and Dubrovnik was immortalized as King's Landing and the Red Keep. In addition to this, the series "Borgia" was filmed in Dubrovnik in January 2014, and in March 2015, the Bollywood film "Fan" was recorded, starring the star and one of the most popular actors in India - Shah Rukh Khan.
Dubrovnik proved that a century-old city can also become a city in the distant future by hosting the eighth episode of the Star Wars film series called "The Last Jedi" directed by Rian Johnson. The film was shot in March 2016, and in this popular SF saga, Dubrovnik was the city of Canto Bight in the desert world of Cantonica. The very next year, in February 2017, Dubrovnik moved to England and became part of the set of the film "Robin Hood: Origins" directed by Otto Bathurst, where Leonardo di Caprio was one of the producers. The title role of the hero from the stories was played by Taron Egerton, Oscar winner Jamie Foxx embodied Little John, and Will Scarlet was Jamie Dornan, the star of the movie series "Fifty Shades".

Stradun declared one of the most beautiful film sets in the world
In September of this year, the popular Netflix series "Vikings: Valhalla", the second season of the hit series about the Scandinavian warriors "Vikings" by Michael Hirst, was filmed in Dubrovnik. The screenplay was written by Jeb Stuart, known for the blockbusters "Die Hard" and "The Fugitive".
In addition, also in September, Oscar winner Kate Winslet was in Dubrovnik, who was filming a movie about the American war photojournalist Lee Miller in the Kupari complex in Župa Dubrovnik, with Jude Law and Marion Cotillard starring alongside her in the film.
It was at the time of those intensive filmings in Dubrovnik that the European Film Academy added 22 new locations to the list of "Treasures of European Film Culture" on the occasion of the launch of the heritage department. Dubrovnik's Stradun was among them! This recognition further positions Stradun, as well as Dubrovnik, on the map of unique and most desirable destinations for filming.
